Nutrition within the app
We use a registered associate nutritionist who is registered with the Association for Nutrition (AFN) to develop all of our nutritional plans within the app. Emily has MSc degree in clinical nutrition and public health and further studies in sports nutrition (MSc). Emily provides evidence-based information and guidance about the impacts of food and nutrition on health at a population level as well as advice to optimise performance in sports and exercise. This can be found on various nutritional posts on our Instagram page.
The meal plan on the app has been designed as a guide. Therefore, the foods included on here and recipes provided on our Instagram page are expected to be consumed in moderation as a part of a healthy balanced diet. We believe that variety is key and that foods should not be labelled as ‘good’ and ‘bad’. We promote a healthy lifestyle as a way of life, rather than fad/short-term diets.
We urge you to become educated in your diet, health and general wellbeing so that you can optimise recovery, muscle growth and look after your general health. This means getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, looking after your mental health, staying active and educating yourself on your diet!
Macros (Macronutrients)
Fat, carbohydrates and protein are macronutrients that we require daily in large quantities to provide our body with energy. There are many factors that will influence our requirements of them, such as age, sex, physical activity level, sport and body composition.
Protein
The Reference Nutrient Intake (RNI) for the adult general public is:
0.75g of protein per kilogram bodyweight per day in adults.
Or
1.2 – 2.0 g per kilogram bodyweight per day is recommended for athletes.
A strength athlete trying to gain weight may require as much as 2g protein per Kg body weight a day.
Fat
The Department of Health (DoH, 1991) suggest average total fat intake should not exceed 35% of food energy of which saturated fat should not exceed 11%.
ACSM, AND and DC (2016) suggest athletes should be discouraged from implementing long term intake of below 20% fat and express that claims of high-fat and low carbohydrate diets to aid sports performance currently has no supporting evidence.
Carbohydrate
The more active an athlete is and the greater the muscle mass, the higher the need for carbohydrate. Elite athletes requirements can be as much as 8-12g/ kg of body weight.
Sugars
Foods high in sugars: more than 22.5g of total sugars per 100g
Low in sugars: 5g of total sugars or less per 100g
Salt
Foods high in salt: more than 1.5g of salt per 100g
Low in salt: 0.3g of salt or less per 100g
Requirements will vary depending on your individual goals and which plan you have chosen within the app. Nonetheless, with this information in mind you should use this knowledge to skip and swap meals appropriately. Each meal on the app displays the nutritional information, kcals (calories), fat, protein and carbohydrate in grams. The app creates daily meal plans based on a random algorithm. We recommend you use the ‘switch meal’ option to choose suitable meals for you for that day. For example, if the algorithm generates you 3 meals containing nuts in one day, such as a porridge with peanut butter, smoothie with almond butter and pad Thai with cashews then we would encourage you to switch out one or two of the meals for one not containing nuts. This would ensure you consume a more balanced variety of meals that day. Balance and variety is key so try and mix them up to make sure you hit your macronutrient requirements. You may also pick your own meals outside of the app to eat!
We use nutritional analysis software designed for nutritionists and dieticians to analyse the meals on the app. Although this is the most accurate tool that can be used to create these meals, the food industry has a 20% tolerance on the nutrition they provide and foods are likely to vary in macronutrients based on different brands and country of origin in which the food is purchased.
Protein powder
You will find protein powder appear in some of the recipes within the app. This is because protein powder can be used to decrease or increase the calorie content of recipes without increasing fat/ sugar content etc. and can increase the satiety (fullness) value of foods which can help with weight management.
Furthermore, whilst we do not recommend that protein powder replace food, as wholefood sources of protein are always preferable, it can be convenient when individuals have relatively high protein intake requirements that cannot be met by food alone. For example, somebody on a vegan diet on the lean programme may receive meals with lower protein to fit into their calorie requirements of the day.
Allergies
All of our meals within the app have been labelled with either a ‘may contain nuts’, ‘may contain gluten’ or ‘may contain lactose’ and ‘Alternatives may be available’. This means that the recipe may contain any of these ingredients however, you may be able to use the recipe but just sub for a similar alternative that you are not allergic or intolerant to.
It is still your responsibility to check that each ingredient used is labelled ‘gluten free’ or ‘lactose free’ or ‘contains nuts’. Furthermore, the nut label only corresponds to tree nuts and peanuts. Not coconut.
If you are following a specific diet due to allergies or illness then we recommend you follow personal advice provided to you by your doctor, nurse and/or dietitian.
Vegetarian/Vegan Recipes
If a recipe is tagged as ‘vegetarian’ or ‘vegan’ it is still your responsibility to check that each ingredient used is indeed vegetarian/vegan.
If soya milk is used in a vegan recipe then please feel free to sub for another milk of choice. When you see ‘high protein yoghurt’ feature on a recipe, this refers to a natural flavoured yoghurt of your choice, that is high in protein.
If you are following a vegetarian/vegan diet we recommend you follow personal advice provided to you by your doctor, nurse and dietitian to ensure you meet nutrient, vitamin and mineral requirements such as iron requirements and B-12 supplements etc.
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant or breast feeding, then please consult your health professional first before following this plan.
Before starting any new diet and exercise programme please check with your doctor and clear any exercise and/or diet changes with them before beginning. By signing up to this app, you are acknowledging that you are participating voluntarily in using our programmes, services, and/or products, and you alone are solely and personally responsible for your results. You acknowledge that you take full responsibility for your health, life and well-being, as well as the health, lives and well-being of your family and children (born and unborn, as applicable), and all decisions now or in the future.
We cannot and do not guarantee that you will attain a specific or particular result, and you accept the risk that results differ for each individual. The health, fitness, and nutrition success depend on each individual’s background, dedication, desire, and motivation. As with any health-related programme or service, your results may vary, and will be based on many variables, including but not limited to, your individual capacity, life experience, unique health and genetic profile, starting point, expertise, and level of commitment.
